These Facts Really Made Us Question Our Understanding of the Earth

Instagram // @northwesttrains123

Our planet is filled with incredible creatures and awe-inspiring physical features. Even after so many years of having advanced technology, scientists are still learning about everything that our wonderful world has to offer. We will be discussing facts about Earth that are so crazy they don’t even seem real. From discovering the real tallest mountain in the world to a sinking city… You will be sure to learn something new.

Mount Everest Isn’t the Tallest Mountain in the World

Over the years, Mount Everest has gained a reputation for being the tallest mountain in the world. Hikers from all over the world flock to Nepal to conquer the mountain by reaching its summit. However, it is technically not the highest mountain in the world.

Facebook // Robert Guse

On the Big Island of Hawaii, Mauna Kea reaches only 13,769 feet above sea level. If you were to measure the height of the volcano from its true base underneath the water, it would be a massive 32,800 feet — making it a whole 3,000 feet taller than Mount Everest.

Mexico City Is Slowly Sinking

In 1325, Mexico City was built on a lake when the Aztecs filled in a section of Lago de Texcoco to create an artificial island. Because of this, scientists have discovered that the city is sinking roughly 3.2 feet every year.

Instagram // @oscar_gloria21

The people of Mexico City drill boreholes into the artificial island to meet their water needs. Because of this water removal, the city has sunk an incredible 62 feet in just over 60 years!

The Philippines Has More Than 7,600 Islands

The Philippines is often referred to as the Philippine Islands, and for good reason! This country is made up of over 7,600 individual islands, which is about 600 more than researchers initially believed.

Instagram // @positvibesbuzzin

If you are planning a trip to the Philippines, it may be a hefty task to try and visit each of these islands. Who knows, that number might even creep closer to 8,000 in time, as even researchers admit that there’s always more to discover.

Alaska Is the Westernmost and Easternmost Area of the U.S.

If you take a quick glance at a world map, it’s easy to conclude that Alaska is the westernmost part of the United States of America. However, upon further investigation, you will also discover that it is the easternmost part of the country.

Instagram // @ig_shotz

The state stretches so far west that it crosses into the Eastern hemisphere of the globe. Semisopochnoi Island, which forms a part of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, is actually the Easternmost part of the entire North American continent!

The Philippines Deception

In the Philippines, you will find one of nature’s most deceptive islands. Vulcan Point is an island that can be found inside of Main Crater Lake. However, it doesn’t stop there. In turn, Main Crater Lake is found on Volcano Island.

Instagram // @torquea

Volcano Island can be found in Lake Taal, which is located on the island of Luzon. It’s pretty confusing, we know! Luzon is the largest and most populated island in the Philippines, so at least the Philippine locals get the gist of it.

Russia Has Morning and Night Simultaneously

Everybody knows that Russia is the largest country in the world. However, it’s still incredible to hear that Russia covers 11 time zones out of the 24 in the world! This means that while one side of the country is waking up, the other side is sitting down for dinner.

Instagram // @alexey_agafon

Another interesting fact about time zones is that France technically uses more than Russia. With all of its overseas territories scattered far and wide across the globe, France’s territories and regions actually cover most of the time zones in the world.

The Sargasso Sea Does Not Have a Coast

It may seem obvious that every sea in the world has to have some sort of coastline to separate it from the landmass. However, this is not the case with the Sargasso Sea, which is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Instagram // @weldonwade

Found in the North, this sea lies in between four different ocean currents, meaning that it doesn’t come into contact with any land. The sea is named after the Sargassum seaweed that can be found in its waters.

The Largest Rock in the World

Contrary to what the name might suggest, Mount Augustus is not a mountain. Instead, it is the world’s largest rock. Found in the Australian Outback, Mount Augustus is 2,300 feet tall and can be seen from more than 100 miles away.

Instagram // @australiasgoldenoutback

This rock is over a billion years old! More so, it’s more than twice the size of the Ayers Rock, which is by far the most famous of the two. Ayers Rock is only 600 million years old — a baby compared to Mount Augustus.

2.4 Miles and 20 Hours Apart

The Diomede Islands are located between the United States and Russia. In fact, the two countries divide them. Big Diomede is technically in Russian territory, while Little Diomede is in U.S. territory.

Instagram // @ahteemu

That said, while the two islands are actually only 2.4 miles apart, they are separated by a 20-hour time zone difference. This is why Big Diamede is referred to as Tomorrow Land, and Little Diomede is called Yesterday Land.

The Oldest Continuously Inhabited City in the World

When you think of the oldest city in the world, Athens or Cairo may come to mind. However, Damascus, Syria, actually holds the title of the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world.

Instagram // @kaneezezainab95

The city has been home to people for over 11,000 years and was named the Arab Capital of Culture in 2008. It has over 125 monuments from its past, dating back to 3,000 B.C.

The Most Caves in the World Can Be Found in Kentucky

Kentucky, also known as the Bluegrass State of the U.S., is home to the largest number of caves in the world (which may surprise a few people). These caves all form a part of the Mammoth Cave system.

Instagram // @therealbkawada

This system is over 400 miles long. However, it’s worth noting that scientists are still exploring the area, which means it is likely even bigger! Parts of the cave network can be explored in the Mammoth National Park.

It Snows in the Sahara Desert

When you imagine the Sahara Desert, you probably visualize dry, sandy, and barren landscapes with intense heat. While temperatures can reach insane highs, it also gets freezing cold during the nights.

Facebook // Franca Vaninetti

In fact, in 2018, it got so cold that the desert was covered in a layer of snow. From the pictures, you’d think you’re looking at a frozen mountain peak in the Swiss Alps!

The Heart of the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is widely considered the heart and soul of Australian tourism. Thousands of scuba divers and snorkelers visit the Australian coastline every year in order to see the most beautiful underwater landscape on Earth.

Instagram // @manon.bna

However, from above the water, the reef also has a lot to offer visually. From a plane, you will be able to spot a heart-shaped reef in Whitsundays. In order to preserve the heart, tourists are not allowed to get close to it by boat.

Everest Is Also Not the Closest Mountain to the Moon

We already know that Mount Everest isn’t technically the tallest mountain in the world. However, while it is the highest peak above sea level, it isn’t even the closest mountain to the moon!

Instagram // @junglemarkadventure

This title goes to Mount Chimborazo. Since the Earth is actually a sphere (with the equator being inflated), Chimborazo is actually 1.5 miles closer to the surface of the moon than Everest. However, it does only stand at just over 20,000 feet tall.

Africa Is in All 4 Hemispheres

Africa is much larger than many people credit it for. In fact, it’s the only continent in the world to span all four hemispheres.

Instagram // @ancient_coins_antique_maps

In total, Africa covers 12 million square miles of the Earth’s surface. A lot of this land is made up of the Sahara Desert, which can be found in the northern hemisphere of the continent.

Water Covers Most of the Earth’s Surface

It is no secret that the ocean and other water bodies make up the majority of the Earth’s surface. However, some people might not understand exactly how extensive this is.

Facebook // NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration

71% of the surface is made up of water, most of which is unusable to humans, as it is salt water. Only 0.007% of water on Earth can be consumed for drinking!

The English Plot of Land in North Carolina

In a town called Ocracoke, North Carolina, you will find a small piece of land that is technically under British rule. The land is used as a cemetery and memorial to honor HTM Bedfordshire, a naval ship used during WW2.

Instagram // @capehatterasnps

The German Navy defeated the ship, and only 4 bodies of the 37-man crew were ever found. The cemetery was given to the British so that the bodies could technically be buried on home soil.

Drops of Water Traveling the Mississippi River

The Mississippi River is one of the longest in the world and the second longest on the North American continent. In total, it borders or passes through 10 states.

Instagram // @silidreamer

To get an idea of how long the river actually is, an experiment was done to track how long it took a single drop of water to travel its entire length. After 90 days, the drop finally reached the end of the river.

The Longest Country Name in the World

The U.K. holds the record for the longest full name in the world — the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The name consists of 56 characters in total.

Instagram // @kawachan380

However, until 2013, Libya held this record under the full name of Al Jumahiriyah al Arabiyah al Libiyah ash Shabiyah al Ishtirakiyah al Uzma. That mouthful of a name had an impressive 74 characters.

Hawaiian Snow

We already know that the Sahara Desert can be covered in snow when temperatures are cold enough during the night, so it may not be too much of a surprise to learn that Hawaii has also experienced snowfall.

Instagram // @andrewrichardhara

Even though Hawaii experiences a tropical climate and warm weather for most of the year, the volcanoes are so tall that temperatures can drop below freezing during the colder months, leading to snowfall.

The Australian Alps Get More Snow Than the Swiss Alps

When you think of Australia, you definitely do not think of snow and high mountain peaks. However, during the winter months, the Australian Alps actually receive more snowfall than the Swiss Alps!

Instagram // @kosciuszkohuts

The Australian Alps, located along the border of New South Wales and Victoria, are an incredibly popular winter holiday destination among locals.

Yellowstone Park’s Supervolcano

There’s so much to see and do at the Yellowstone National Park, making it one of the most popular National Parks in the world. The supervolcano found beneath the surface should definitely be one of the main attractions.

Instagram // @travelwiththeelsers

The last time the volcano erupted was over 640,000 years ago. If it were to happen again, scientists believe that hundreds of cubic miles of material would be blasted from the area.

The Largest Sand Island

The largest sand island on Earth can be found in Australia. Fraser Island, officially called K’gari, was formed over thousands of years of sand blowing across the land. The island is an impressive 76 miles long and 14 miles wide.

Instagram // @elch_q

It covers 1,655 square kilometers. The island is located about 250 kilometers north of Brisbane. It is currently a World Heritage Site and is home to just over 150 people. Now that’s something special, right?

Peru’s Lake Islands

Lake Titicaca in Peru is home to a number of man-made reed islands. These islands were created by groups of people who wanted to live on the water and easily escape danger.

Instagram // @sinacalifornia

Puno was the first lake island, and it has definitely stood the test of time. The islands can withstand the weight of people and the structures they build.

The Shortest Flight in the World

The shortest commercial flight in the world is just 57 seconds long and travels between Westray and Papa Westray in Scotland.

Instagram // @visitscotland

The flight only covers a total of 1.7 miles. While it is probably much easier to take a boat between the two islands, most people take the plane just to say that they have been on the shortest flight in the world.

L.A. Is East of Reno, Nevada

Los Angeles is often referred to as the West Coast of the USA. However, when you look at a map of the world, you will realize that L.A. is actually east of Reno, Nevada, which is a landlocked state.

Instagram // @wanderin.california

L.A. is technically 86 miles east of Reno. When it comes to Geography, it’s important to remember that not everything is as simple as it may seem!

Istanbul Rests on 2 Continents

Istanbul is one of the world’s major cities, with over 2000 years of history, and it’s the only one to form a part of two continents! Separated by the Bosphorus Strait, one section sits in Asia, while the other is in Europe.

Instagram // @jerusalem.city_

The European section is by far the most populous and serves as the city’s historical center. With a population of over 14 million people, Istanbul is one of the world’s busiest cities.

The Coldest Inhabited Place on Earth

If you enjoy the cold, Russia might be the place for you! This massive country is home to the world’s coldest permanently inhabited town. Some people live in Antarctica, but due to the intense cold, they move around throughout the year, meaning that their residencies are not permanent.

Instagram // @global_kannadiga197

Oymyakon once reached an all-time low of -96 °F. While not as cold, Oymyakon typically averages around -58 °F — nice and warm!

Russia and China Each Touch 14 Countries

Russia and China are two of the largest countries in the world (even though Russia holds this title by a considerable margin). With that being said, it may come as a surprise to you that both border the same number of countries.

(Left) Instagram // @olga_inspb | (Right) Instagram // @SethRogan

Russia — including the region of Kaliningrad — and China each border 14 different countries, which is a record high. Despite being large countries in and of themselves, this is still very intriguing. Would you like Russia or China as your neighbor?

The Pyramids of Sudan

Egypt is known for its magnificent ancient pyramids. However, you may be surprised to hear that Sudan holds the record for having the most pyramids in the world – even more than Egypt and Mexico.

Instagram // @ancient_iran_and_world

With between 200 and 250 known pyramids, this small African nation has nearly twice as many as Egypt’s 138. These ancient structures were built for the Kushite kingdoms of Nubia and can be explored by tourists. Additionally, it’s much cheaper and less crowded than the Great Pyramids of Giza.

The USA’s Population

When you look at the population distribution of the USA, you may notice a few interesting trends. For example, most Americans seem to favor coastal living as opposed to inland living. It is no surprise that Southern California has one of the highest population densities, with the promise of warm weather year-round.

Instagram // @alexandramtaylor

The eastern coast is also a very popular area to live in, with New York being the most populated city in the country. Generally, the colder the area gets in winter, and the more rural it is, the fewer people want to live there.

Texas Isn’t That Big

Texas is known for being a mega-state in the USA. However, when compared to Africa, one of the largest continents in the world, it doesn’t really seem all that impressive. It’s considerably smaller than Europe, barely covering four countries.

Reddit // u/OG_ClusterFox

In fact, Texas doesn’t even really stand out when compared to the sizes of the countries in Africa. For example, Sudan, Algeria, Libya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and many more are actually bigger than Texas.

Light Pollution in the USA

If you live along the west or east coast of the U.S., you might not be able to see many (if any) stars at night due to the high levels of light pollution. This is especially true for the eastern half of the country, even up until the Mississippi River.

Reddit // u/RedRRaider

Light pollution can be caused by airports, commercial buildings, and homes that emit large amounts of light. According to research, the region with the most light pollution in the USA is the District of Columbia.

America’s Unique Air Traffic Control Zones

When you look at a map of the air traffic control zones in the USA, you may notice that it looks nothing like the actual map of America. This is because the zones are not divided according to the different states.

Facebook // Fan Maps

Instead, they are centralized around the major US cities, including Houston, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and New York. In total, there are 21 zones, with various sectors within each zone.

Land Use in the USA

The United States is one of the largest countries in the world, which means it offers a wide variety of terrain types for farming. With that being said, the country can be divided into various sectors according to what the land is mainly used for.

Bloomberg

The eastern states produce high quantities of wood, especially timber, whereas middle America is better suited towards livestock farming. Western countries produce a variety of goods, including maple syrup, flowers, and tobacco.

The Mongolian Empire in the 1200s

In the past, the Mongolian Empire was one of the most powerful empires in the world. During the 13th and 14th centuries, their rule stretched across most of Europe and even into parts of Asia.

Instagram // @unimaps.world

Genghis Khan was the leader of this empire, and he had a mission to rule as much land as he could get his hands on. Even though he was eventually defeated, the Mongolian Empire once ruled an impressive nine million square miles of land.

New Zealand Is Tiny Compared to the USA

We already know that the U.S. is one of the largest countries in the world. However, when you look at New Zealand in comparison, you may be shocked to see just how small the oceanic country actually is.

Reddit // u/Panzersaurus

The U.S. is close to a million square kilometers, whereas New Zealand only makes up 260,000 square kilometers of land. If compacted, New Zealand would actually be similar in size to the larger states, such as Texas.

Who Uses the Metric System?

Another factor that sets the USA apart from the rest of the world is that, along with Myanmar and Liberia, it’s one of the only countries to use the Imperial system.

Instagram // @juneelou

This is because the British colonizers who originally settled in America used the Imperial system. Since then, they have decided to stick with what they know, unlike the rest of the world, which moved to the Metric system.

Central USA Has More Farmland Than Trees

If you look at a satellite image map of the USA, you will notice that the coastline regions are much greener than the middle portion of the country. This is due to the fact that the middle part of the U.S. consists of more farmland than forest.

Instagram // @foodtank

It is worth noting that the number of trees across the entire United States has actually increased since the 1950s. As people are becoming more aware of the importance of nature and the effects of deforestation, more trees are being planted.

The USA’s Abandoned Railroads

Railroads were essential in the development of the United States. Trains were used to transport building materials, people, and other goods essential for the Industrial Revolution.

Instagram // @northwesttrains123

However, with the development of cars and aviation, railroads have become less popular over the past twenty years or so. If you look at a map of abandoned railroads in the U.S., you will notice that the majority lie in the eastern part of the country, aligning with early settlement patterns.

Where Are Flamingos Found?

Most people will only ever be able to see flamingos in zoos. However, there are a few places where these magnificent birds live freely — including parts of eastern Africa, the Caribbean, South America, and small parts of South Asia.

Instagram // @i.loveflamingo

Flamingos tend to thrive in warm, tropical environments. Although these birds are not considered endangered, they have battled population declines, which is why they are rarely seen in the wild.

California Should Be Its Own Country

California is the most populated state in the United States, with a whopping 39.5 million residents. To put this into perspective, that is only 20 million less than the whole of Italy, which is an entire country!

Reddit // u/drumorgan

California also happens to be larger than Italy, with a total of 403,000 square kilometers compared to Italy’s 301,000 square kilometers. This is just further evidence of how massive the U.S. actually is!

the Population Distribution of the U.S.

We have already discussed how the majority of U.S. citizens choose to live on either coast as opposed to middle America. However, you may be surprised to learn just how densely populated the costs actually are.

Reddit // u/Ok-Expert-6542

The total number of people living on the eastern and western coasts combined is equal to the total number of people who live in middle America. This means that roughly half of the population is packed into 15 to 20% of the total land available!

The U.S. Highway System

The first highway in the United States of America was constructed in 1926. Since then, the highway system has expanded to just under 160,000 miles long in total.

Pinterest // @thedrivemedia

The U.S. also has the longest motorway system in the world, with close to 4 million kilometers worth of road networks. This is nearly double China’s total road network system, which is the second largest in the world.

The Size of Australia Compared to the USA

Maps can be very deceptive. Some countries are altered slightly in size in order to fit everything in. For example, Australia is actually bigger than it appears on a world map, while the U.S. is slightly smaller.

Reddit // u/burgerking_foot

However, Australia is still 27% smaller than the United States, even with the Oceanic country being one of the largest in the world. The U.S. is the third most populated country behind China and India. It’s definitely a good thing that there is so much space available!
